Jack you write the following in "How to treat Babesia" It is dosed at 1.6 – 2.3 mg/lb of bodyweight in a single IM injection

What decides whether to give 1.6 or 2.3? It's quiet a difference.

I've got some now and it says 0,07g of Diminazene per ml .

So for a 40lb dog that would be around 1cc of berenil? (1.8mg/lb)

Asking just to be on the safe side.

The standard guideline for Berenil is 3.5 mg/kg of bodyweight (or 1.6 mg per lb):

http://www.msd-animal-health.co.za/products/berenil-rtu/020_product_details.aspx

In that write-up, the recommended dosage for dogs is 0.1 ml per 2 kg ... or 1 ml per 44lb. (I generally give 1 ml / 40 lb.)

The 1.6 - 2.3 mg/lb of bodyweight listed in the "How to Treat Babesia" represents a deviation from the standard guideline, based on severity of the problem.

Thanks Jack

Berenil can also be used as a preventative, to prevent an animal from contracting babesia. This means if you believe your dog might possibly be exposed to another animal (or even to an environment) that has the disease, you can inject your animal with the above dose two weeks prior to the contact, or a visit, and this drug will allegedly prevent your animal from contracting babesia.

Is it recommendable to give berenil to a dog who is not sick?

Has anyone tried giving it this way and then let it be in contact with a dog from which u know it has babesia? And after had a cpr test to confirm it didnt pass on?

Yes, you can use it as a preventative if given 2 weeks before (says so on the label).

However, I would use on the low end, not the high end, in my dosing.

There can be negative consequences of using too much Berenil, so I would err on the side of caution in my dosing ...

Your english is way better but what i understand is that you protect your animal for 2 weeks after injecting. Or do you mean the same thing? It looks like you say you need to inject it 2 weeks before contact.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

There is a 2-week window of protection, supposedly.

You could give a week before, 10 days before, etc.

But after 2 weeks, the effect will wear off ... that is my take anyway :)

I've used it as prevention with success. I've also used it, along with doxy, on a dog during the last 3 weeks of his keep. The dog never missed a beat and went on to win without any problems.
