Raised/Brood Kennels

ive got plans made up for an 8x4. my question is, does anybody keep theyre dogs in these things permanently? most standart kennels are 6x4 or so anyways, so im wondering what the difference is? any thoughts?? it seems smart and a way to dodge parasites......and a good way to avoid fence fighting when u let a dog loose on the yard.......i like jacks set up with that "twilight" dog in it, although i seen some "cement like ply boards at home depot so id use that as the flooring...

a lot of cattle people i know keep their stock dogs in small above ground pens all year round with mesh floors never heard of any dramas from it.

i probobly wouldnt use mesh floors but rather the cement like plywood board they sell @ homedepot.

yeah not sure id like mesh floor either i just heaps of people keep their kelpies like that no drama. i like my concrete floors conected to sewer benifit far out weigh the cost.

Check out the you tube video with Tom Garner and his kennels he builds. They are nice and work out to be rather large. I have raised brood pens, one is 10X4 and the other is 9X5...Built out of custom deck leftovers. One floor is 5/4 decking board with an 3/4 inch gap. The other is cement decking board with a 3/4 inch gap. EWO

do you keep grown dogs in them permanantly though as if they were regular kennels? i mean, for some reason i keep rememberin the joe woodall video and his pup having jacked up feet from the pound, eventhough im thinking its the wire flooring that causes that and i of course would be using plywood. plus it would be a little more difficult to clean than a kennel, but other than that i really dont see the difference........if anything, other than the cleaning i would think the raised beds would be more beneficial..........

I have seen dogs who lived exclusively in wire mesh/expanded metal floors have jacked up feet. Especially if the holes are large enough for parts of the foot to go down in them regularly. I like to use wood decking boards myself. They are spaced about 3/4" to 1" apart for easy cleaning yet the dogs foot can't get between them. I have seen people who use brood type pens for permanent kennels/housing. It is an easier clean and it does not expose the dog to things on the ground. I would prefer the dog have the ability to move about on a chain spot but to each his own. EWO

CA has Anti Tethering Laws, if ac got wind that i was chaining dogs for more than 3 hours its a FAT fine!

Happening in alot of places.I believe that is why Garner went to the kennels. His county went to anti-tethering laws as well. I personally believe a good chain set up is much better but I am in the minority. His kennels look nice. I know a guy who has all his dogs in above ground pens.I am guessing they are about 5X10. He has about 8 or 9. He has a fenced in area he turns them out in one at a time for daily exercise. It works for him. I have met people whose dogs spend their entire lives in a crate. So to on of those dogs a 5X10 would be castle-like. EWO

How did your raised kennels turn out? I'm thinking of experimenting with some. I'm thinking of buying one of the 6 gauge 12'x6'x4' kennels and raising them using either composite, wood, rubber flooring. Im interested in seeing how the dogs take to them and how it convenient it'll be during the Rainier seasons.

I have three of them two night boxes that are 4'x4' that is used at night and also a 10'Lx6'Hx4'wide with mesh siding to allow sun light in deck flooring spaced just enuff so the dogs feet dont slip thru! Then we put tarp over it that we roll up in the summer to let the breeze in and drop it down over the winter to keep out that cold winter air. They do get wedded feet if u would but a daily walk or allowed to run a chain a few hours a day helps with that! Tell u this the one who is kept in the 10'x6'x4' is much more healthier and less baths and if i forget about a worming no real worries.easy to clean and he loves it just as much just u will need to get them. Out to move free

There's a site called coondawgs.com. They have a large brood pen on it that is 8-feet by 16-feet. I wouldn't keep a dog in there permanently without daily exercise. I understand the parasite avoidance issue but I would also think about the overall wellbeing of my dogs. If you have only a few that you could give daily exercise to, this might be feasible. If you have more than a few, chains is the way to go. JMHO

I agree with your last part. I have some friends who use above ground pens. Most of theirs are about 6x8 maybe less, they do have turn out spots their dogs get put on at least once daily, weather permitting.

I can see the need for these pens to keep a dog, have a brood bitch and her pups or one that is recovering. Other than that I feel it is to confining overall for a healthy bulldog to live this way.

I much prefer to have my dogs running freely on a 10 foot or larger chain spot, they seem happier to me kept this way.

Don't really like those, as the outside section is all plywood flooring.

Looks nice the day of construction, but after 2 straight years of dogs pissing on the plywood floor, it won't look so nice. Will never get the stanch of piss out either.

I much prefer 2x4 flooring, spaced an inch apart, for the outside flooring.

This allows for piss/shit to fall out, right after it comes out of the dogs, minimizing contact with the wood, rather than the pee/poop sitting there on plywood for hours (absorbing/ruining it) because it has nowhere to go.

Yes I built one using 2x10's, my preference simply because I don't like the idea of a pup not have a somewhat solid surface to walk on. It kind of does :confused: defeat the purpose of having a slotted floor, but plenty of shit and piss still falls through the inch gaps.

Years ago I built a 1/2 inch plywood deck in a chain link kennel. It sat on treated 2x4's on the ground. I treated the plywood with sealer/stain and it lasted many years. It wasn't occupied constantly though but there wasn't any more smell than normal. I reapplied the sealer yearly. I added a cap full of bleach to the stain which is an old flooring trick to cover smell in nasty people's homes when remodeling.

My only reservation is what exactly is it? It says recycled materials.....and what chemicals did they use to bind the material together? If a dog chews and ingested it then what?

Guys, when considering these building materials, you can find some comfort in the fact that most of this stuff has to be approved for children, playgrounds and crap like that. Therefore, it SHOULD BE (no guarantee) safe for any animals.
I would trust that stuff 100% myself and could very well use it next time.

True - but if a kid did do that, it would have to pass that test or the liability that would come from that would ruin a business.

I believe, 100% that this stuff we are talking about is completely safe for dogs.
