The box on the end of the brood pen is 3.5×4' I would like to put a lamp in to keep it warm on these cold winter nights. I have pups due on dec 20 th. I went to famr store to ask sone questions and look at lamps but the associate thought the 125w lamps they carried would heat up to much and suggested a regular 40 or 60w light bulb. The 125w heat lamps was the lowest they carried. Any suggestions?

You want to put in the doghouse correct? Be careful the pups cannot touch the lamp, some can get really hot

Try a Ceramic Heater. I use to use heat lamps but after a few issues I moved on to these and never looked back.

My suggestion would be to put a thermometer in there and see what each lamp brings the box up to. Folks have used coffee cans and wire mesh to stop dogs from touching it. They also make heat pads. I use two lamps but my house is much taller than that. Tall enough to walk into.

Yea in the dog house. I planned on using wire mesh to keep the dogs from touching it. By the time they are big enough to touch it I probably wont need it in there.

I would keep pups inside at night.I am a high voltage lineman n have seen many fires due to electrical heaters n heat lamps...I came home from work once to check on the dogs it was 13° or sum thing.pulled my smallest gyp out of her barrel n she was very warm.stuff the houses full w/straw.dogs have to dig there way in.

Keep us posted how it works for you LL, I use wireless thermostats and they work well for me. As long as you're in range, it picks up real accurate temps. Sure beats running out to the dog house.

I looked at 125w heat lamps while in use at the pet store. And I desided to go with the 250w. Its going to get down to 23° tonight and a high tomorrow of 25°. So im giving this a test run.

About 4 hours and the outside temp is around 43. Inside the box its about 70°. I can see some gaps the need some caulk. But im happy that I went with the 250w. It may not be good enough for brand new pups but after about 2 weeks it shouod do just fine. Hopefully it wont be so damn cold for to long and if it was regular temp for this time of the year I think it would be sufficient
