There's more to this story than I feel at liberty to share, but in a nutshell we have:
Quality man of his word who does right by his dogs. All dogs are fed quality feed and take care of properly.
Nutjobs come looking over his fence after an "anoynymous tipster" says he's got 30 dogs and they are all fighting dogs.
He comes out the door one day to find a nutjob on a light poll taking pictures over his fence.
Next day, they seize ALL 10 dogs. That's right, only a third of what they said he had and not a single dog was underweight, in bad condition or had any open sores or wounds of any kind.

He is now in the fight of his life for the lives of his dogs.

The EBA here in Texas is strongly behind helping him. He's received helpful info from the likes of Gary Hammonds, Bob Stevens and numerous others who have seen the legitimate unwarranted threat these morons possess.

The man's name is Brent and he has more than one or two friends on this board. His wife contacted me to post this website Http://www.gofundme.com/6gptwc so if anyone can help, in any way whatsoever, please do.

This is the shit we all read about.

I really hope things work out for this gentleman. The seizure of this type of property is enough to make a grown man cry. I'll donate to this cause

America has become like the soviet union. People get their dogs taken away without any proof what so ever. Almost every day we learn about unjust ways the government are either monitoring their people, monitoring other states leaders. I have nothing against the american people. Your government is just scary. Land of the free, not so much....

You are right Skipper.
To be clear, they seized 10 dogs......6 WERE PUPS!
Holding him in jail with no bond, on "weapons charge" b/c there was a shotgun in a shed in the back yard.
Also should be pointed out, it was his grandmother's home, not his. Search warrant was for HIS property and gun was on HER property.
Animal control, state police, some specific anti-dogfighting group, city and county police.
You'd thought they were taking down Tony Montana

This guy and his family are very close friends to my wife and I. VA is one of the worst states to own the breed in because they have their misinformed dog fighting task force which is lead by Richard Samuels. He is a self proclaimed no it all who tries to say that owning a PitBull type dog with a treadmill is intent to fight animals.

A few of the facts.

1.) Owner is not a dog fighter.

2.) Owner feeds premium kibble during the winter months because it allows him to keep the auto feeders full so that all the dogs are good and fat for the VA winter.

3.) He will never and has never owned over 11 dogs at a time in the last 10 years that I've known him.

4.) He keeps a rigorous worming routine so all of his dogs are parasite free.

5.) He does not work due to a health issue that I will not disclose but he will bust his butt each and everyday for his wife and kids to have a clean safe home and his dogs to have fresh food and water no matter what the weather.

6,) He is being held with no bond due a fire arm being found on his grandmother's property. 5 other people keep stuff in this very same shed.

Please if you can help this guy out. My wife and I are doing everything we can do to help and will keep helping as much as possible. I am doing this because I know for a fact that if it was me he would be doing the same with no questions asked.

If you have any questions please send me a PM and we will chat.

They have Court today and his wife just finished speaking to their lawyer. They are looking for a full dismissal. So if any of you are GOD fearing, praying folks, please take a second and say a prayer for him and his family. Now with that being said please understand that we will not let the va dog fighting task force or the ar nuts off the hook that easy. I will be looking to set up a fund to finance a lawyer to go to the state court and have the dog laws cleared up from chain spots to how wide collars are for a proper chain setups. Jack I would like to speak to a few of you guys off line so that I can go in armed with all of the proper wording and information to make this happen. If we do this then we can prove to the state of VA that their dogfghting task force is needed NO MORE!!!!! The job can be done via county run animal control and stop wasting the tax payers dollars on things like this. IT HAS TO STOP!!!!!!!!!

LOL sure i would. But i do believe health care should be a basic human right. Not depending on what size your bank account is.

This is my last post, because I don't want to take away from this one, but we absolutely disagree then.
The simple truth is, your health is YOUR responsibility ... it is not your "right" to have someone else (other people) take care of you.
You are responsible for taking care of yourself. Period. And I mean period.
We human beings have become so weak, and so expectant of "help" from everyone else, except our own selves, it really is insane.

Jack is one helluva wordsmith and a wealth of information and I guarantee you, he can point you in the right direction as well.
Other great sources are Gary Hammonds and TL whom you already know. These guys have been in court rooms from a ton of different angles. GH has seen just about every kind of bullshit thing around our dogs that there possibly exists and he'll be more than willing to share how to help.

Well the battle is still going. The state had a custody hearing for the dogs yesterday and they had their "expert vet" say that the dogs where dehydrated by 8% and that the teeth had been filed. But the expert vet could not tell them how old the old dog's scares where. They have 10 days to have a vet go check the dogs out and come up with 30K for the 9 month carebill that they are projecting it will cost to care for the dogs while the case is being heard. His family is looking for someone in the area who can testify on the use of treadmills

Oh and No Quarter they had the nerve to say that his dogs where wormer. GTFOH!!!!!!!!!!

That’s a real shame. How can he fight a bunch of trumped up lies?

Here are a couple of local news articles about his dogs being taken –

http://www.nbc29.com/story/24482793/owner-speaks-out-after-10-dogs-seized-from-fluvanna-home

http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/Fluvanna-Co-Man-Faces-Charges-Connected-to-Dog-Fighting-241371741.html

The first article had a longer clip that I saw when it was first broadcast and they seemed more sympathetic to his plight, I wonder if that 29 News would do another story on this? They showed some nice insulated dog houses and his set ups are fine, nice pens for pups and kennels and a couple chain spots.

I just looked at the video in the second news story link and they show photos of the “evidence papers”… They list all sorts of stupid stuff, like a paper plate, a bottle of fish oil, 5 bones, a metal spring, a bottle of unknown liquid, 2 bottles, a slip cable, 6 chains, bag of feed, animal skin, a harness, a pellet gun, container with books and papers, a computer, etc…

What they said in the hearing yesterday sounds ridiculous. Their “expert” said the dogs were 8% dehydrated, did they ever think that maybe this was from the stress of being taken, and 8% is not life threatening. And teeth were filed? And the dogs had worms? What BS.

And they want $30,000 for holding his dogs for 9 months? Wow, that is just wrong. Even without that, he needs deep pockets to fight the court stuff, let alone the dogs’ care bills, when they could have just let those dogs stay where they were.

It sure sounds like a lot of trumped up crap, as don’t they usually have to serve a search warrant and have animal control look into how the dogs are kept before they just storm in and take all the dogs?

Did he ever take his dogs to any confirmation shows? If he can prove he shows the dogs as a hobby, this might help. Treadmills are used for other breeds too, and so are breeding stands.

You might get more support by posting his story on Facebook. I am not on Facebook but it gets a lot of use and might be worth a try.

Another news article from today --

http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/Judge-Orders-County-to-Seize-Dogs-from-Alleged-Dog-Fighting-242627881.html

Officials in Fluvanna County have determined what will happen to several dogs seized in an apparent dog fighting ring.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Jeff Haslip says a judge ordered the dogs to be seized by the county.

Thirty-nine-year-old Brenton Mathis, the original owner of the dogs, has 10 days to appeal the ruling. If he does, he has to post a $30,000 bond for the animals. If Mathis doesn’t appeal, then the county will decide what to do with the dogs.

The dogs were seized from a home last week, after a neighbor complained about there being more than 30 dogs on the property. Ten dogs were collected by authorities.

Mathis was arrested and charged with 8 felony counts of fighting animals, 8 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and one felony count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

He is being held without bond, and a hearing is scheduled for February 18th.

***************************

I hope he can get a good lawyer and fight this.

There was a hearing yesterday and it does not look good for him.

Sounds like a lot of trumped up crap to me. If he’d had hounds or another breed, no one would have bothered him. But anyone with pit bulls is suspect these days, it’s truly a fucked up system.

Filed teeth? And scars? Of 10 dogs, 4 adults and 6 puppies, how could 8 dogs have scars when they first said only 1 dog had a scar? And how could he be charged for not providing care when his set ups had shelter, food, and water?

Pretty sad. I still hope he can fight this.

http://www.newsplex.com/news/headlines/Suspect-in-Fluvanna-Co-Dog-Fighting-Case-in-Court-246049641.html

Feb. 18, 2014
The case against a Fluvanna County man accused of running a dog fighting ring is moving forward.

On Tuesday, a judge heard evidence against Brendon Mathis during a probable cause hearing in Fluvanna Co. He is facing eight counts of felony animal fighting, one felony count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and 10 misdemeanor counts of failure to care for an animal.

The judge also heard from two officers and a veterinarian about what conditions the dogs were found in, and what else was discovered on Mathis' property.

The veterinarian tested that three of the 10 dogs seized had evenly filed-down teeth, and that 8 had scarring consistent with dog fighting.

Literature about the rules for dog fighting, as well as cages and a device used to strengthen a pit bull’s jaws were also reportedly found on the property.

Mathis is due back in court on Monday, Feb 24. He is currently being held without bond.
