What is Trimethaprim Sulfamethoxazole used for?

The single greatest use of trimethoprim-sulfa in dogs is for mastitis (as the greatest concentration of this drug is found in mammary tissues), but I also use it for coccidia in pups.

However, depending on the exact pathogen, TMZ is also extremely effective for mid-ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis (kennel cough), bite wounds, urinary tract infections, and certain skin infections.

As with any other antibiotic, "best practice" is to FIRST identify what's wrong with the dog before you go slinging antibiotics in its direction ... however, with problems like mastitis or urinary tract infections, TMZ is a "first line" defense and can be used with confidence.

Pyometra, however, is something else again ...
