Pyometra

so i have a bitch that recently had a false pregnancy. as i was bathing her today i noticed slight discharge comming from her snatch, it was a milky white substance and it caused some alarm. so i jump online and got some info, and from the articles i read it says that those symptoms can be signs of either"vaginitis" & or "pyometra". Shes eats like a pig, has all the energy & excitement in the world. so she isnt "acting sick". just discharge.

so my question for jack & the rest of the board is this: is this (discharge) something any of you guys have ran into/seen before? and if so, did it in fact turn out to be either "vaginitis" or "pyometra"? how exactly do i go about treating this if so? i know theres got to be a video or blog about this, but unfortunately im not as tech savvy with the CPU as id like to think i am..... thanks in advance for all comments & concerns.

Usually, my experience is a white discharge = pregnancy ... are you sure it's false :mrgreen:

Hmmm ... how often did you stick her?

she came into heat on jul 10th, we stuck her on the 20th & 22nd... i calculated her due date for the 22nd of Sep.

from what i understand is it could take up to 5 days for conception so i gave it to the 30th to be sure (eventhough the 63rd day landed on the 23rd), so i put her back on the chainspot.

Okay, it sounds like you're right and she's passed her time.

My honest thought was that you might have a one-pup litter, but it sure doesn't sound like pyometra to me at all.

Pyometra, if it's open and you can see a discharge, tends to be brownish, and it stinks to high heaven.

Bitches are listless, may have a fever, don't eat much, and drink a lot.

A perfectly happy bitch, who eats well, and has NO SMELL to the discharge wouldn't worry me.

You could get a simple pap smear to be sure ... but I highly doubt that's what it is.

Better to be safe than sorry, but she has no real symptoms.

Is the discharge stinky?

would you see any detriment in running a round of cephlexin & baytril through her just to be on the safe side? i figure any bacterial infection that may or may not be there will get wiped out with the anti biotics, if theres nothing there, then there shouldnt be anything to build resistance to the medicine?

I wouldn't. It would be cheaper to get a smear.

Running 21 days of Baytril is expensive, and wasteful if it's not needed ... and possibly harmful if there is other kinds of bacteria outside its scope.

ill see what i can do about getting her into the vet, ill keep you updated. my fear is that as soon as i mention pregnancy theyre going to want to bring out the x rays and pile the bills up...just to tell me she doesnt have pups and send me home with some mox or keflex:-?

You're in control. You tell them what you want: pap smear/cytology, nothing more.
