UGK, your problem was you spelled "cocidia" incorrectly. It is coccidia, not cocidia :idea:

We try to provide the best information we can, but we don't have a provision for the inability to spell, nor can we help it if you don't think of looking in the "Article" section for Articles.

Albin is a great preventative, especially in the water as Jacks video shows HoHoweve, iif you already have it, thereiisnnothing better than Ponazuril.

Actually, I never use Albon in water. I use TMZ/Flagyl in combo as a first line.
I know of people who do the albon-in-water thing, so I mention it, but most puppies I've seen would rather die than drink Albon water :lol:

I do agree that Ponazuril is ultimately the best solution, as mentioned in the article, but I use it as a last resort only.

The reason is 1) the price, 2) the concentration, and 3) getting it over the counter without a prescription.
It is $222.00 for a 127-gram tube @ 15% constitution. Not only is this quite expensive, but it is way too highly-concentrated for a puppy at 15%.
You have to take 10 ml of 15% paste (which = 150mg/ml) and add 10 ml of water for a total volume of 20 ml, that which then becomes the preferred 75 mg/ml ratio for puppies.

Agreed, my vet makes it for me at 60 mg ratio. Again, a good relationship with a vet is key. I'm a control freak and treat all my pups for it a week after I take them off the mom. .

I just learned an important discovery right now by re-examining the label ... Ponazuril also gets toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasmosis is the disease that killed Poncho. I thought it was cancer, but it turned out to be toxoplasmosis.
Dogs get it by eating cat shit. Human woman also lose pregnancies because of toxoplasmosis, by cleaning litterboxes or otherwise getting contaminated.
Cats get toxoplasmosis by eating raw, wild meat and infect other cats, humans, etc.

Anyway, discovering that Ponazuril also dispatches toxoplasmosis would have been an important thing for me to know 15 years ago, and should be "mentally bookmarked" by every dogman reading this page :idea:

Luckily I haven't had to deal with coccidia the last few litters I've whelped.
I always give my bitches plain unsweetened yogurt or plain kefir several times a week. I also give it to pups when they start eating on their own. And I've also always mixed frozen BilJac with the kibble I feed (for weaning pups).

I have used Sulmet in the past but it didn't work very well and I'd usually go to the Sulfa Trim to wipe out the rhea!

Wow, great info!

I knew about the risks to pregnant women with cleaing cat boxes and such but did not know much more about the toxoplasmosis and how it affects dogs.

I hope you do an updated PIT BULL BIBLE and put this in there!
