Another older dog man has passed on. Andy as we all called him passed from a lingering illness this past Christmas Eve, age 67. I grew up with Andy and worked with him and his siblings on his Father's farm. Andy later worked and retired from Nucor Steel. Owned a ton of stock with Nucor.
We got into the dogs around the same time and shared some dogs over the years. Andy was a very private dog man and showed most of his dogs in the Pee Dee area. Back in those days there was plenty of dog action around these parts with a lot of dog men participating.
Andy won over the likes of dog men like W. Truett, M. Gainey, C. Middleton, K. Marlowe and one of his main rivals was the Kelly town combine. They never could win over his dogs. Andy was the first dog conditioner of the famous V. Jackson's Hank in Hank's first win over R. Byrd's famed Arizona Red. Andy later took the Chandler (Young's) Face bitch through her two wins over F. Jacob and later F. Jacob and J. Johnson combine. Andy taught R.E. Bass of Red Boy fame, some manners on trying to take advantage of green horn dog men. Beating one of Bass' big Red Boy bitches like a red headed step child. LOL
Andy was a quite man and said very little. When setting up his matches. Went over the details, set it all down on paper with witness, shook your hand, said see you at that time, do not be late. Last time you would see him till show time. One of his friends and backers use to joke and say a thing about Andy. He said if Andy was the Sherriff of this county and told me to be out of town by next Sundown. I would leave at first light. LOL Andy was a man of his word and said what he meant and meant what he said. Was never a sore loser or a prideful winner, win or lose, shook your hand and went home. Never hung around when the show was over.
Some of the dogs he owned, were some of the first Loposay Tiger Jack/Loposay Beanie/Bullet bred dogs. One of his Champion dogs was Howle's Buckshot. Andy owned one of the last heavy inbred Cotton's Bullet dogs formerly owned by the late John Shivar. This dog's name was Sambo. Sambo was a beautiful well built black dog with a small white patch in his chest. Was around twelve years old at that time. Tried to get a litter off his Howle's (Martin's) Lady bitch. But had no luck with Sambo. Sambo died some months later on the chain of old age.
Another main stud dog, Andy used was gotten from V. Jackson. This dog's name was CH Howle's Toby. This Toby dog's sire was Weaver's Mike. Weaver's Mike being a full sibling brother to Hooten's Butcher Boy. Howle's Toby won a hard match over a 2X winner of C. Middleton's, a heavy bred Red Boy dog.
Middleton thought a lot of his dog and all knew his dog was deep game. V. Jackson tried to talk Middleton out of going into the Toby dog. This Toby dog was a rugged and hard biting dog, being deep game as well. Middleton was a Tough man that all respected, and no one fooled around with. But that day I saw him tear up a little over the loss of his game dog. We all felt his loss and yet Middleton included, gave Andy our complements with his win.
Andy was one of the last owners of J. Johnson's Rage's sibling brother, formerly known as Hampton's Boze. Andy/M. June bought Boze from C. Middleton. Middleton later on got a bitch dog off of Boze and my later Young's Face bitch. When J. Bunch/Parkers owned Boze. Boze is in the breeding of the last best dogs of W. Truett through his Prince dog breeding's. Andy borrowed my Young's Monkey bitch and bred her to Boze but had no luck getting any pups. Andy/M.June later sold Boze to F. Jacobs.
Snake Man/Fat Bill beginnings in the dogs began with a pup bitch bought from Andy by Snake man. That bitch is known as Snake man's Shelby, that later produced the Snake man's Runt bitch and so on. I was there that day when Snake man bought this pup from Andy. We being country farm boys had never saw a hard core biker covered in tattoos.
There is much more to tell. Andy was very active up till he lost his only Son in a bad car accident. This devastated Andy/Family and he never got over the loss of his son. He quit the dogs and his game chickens, became sort of a recluse, would talk nothing anymore about the dogs etc. Cheers
