Bat Ears...
Is there a cause for this? Is it genetically passed down? All views and opinions welcome.
And if you have them, let's see them, here are my 2...

Here goes a bat eared hound.
Batgirl.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n204/Nashiedog/01072007054.jpg
I saw this trait a lot in the Fontenot/ Maloney/Mayfield dogs. One being Maloney's Davis. Also dogs that carried any of the later brindle darker colored Lightner dogs and some of the red nose Lightner strain of dogs.
Another color trait that popped up with a lot of those stiff Bat eared dogs. Was a red Nose and chocolate color or a red nose and dark brandy wine red color. Very attractive looking dogs. The rest with the long lappy ears coming all black, white/black/brindle colors. Not so in all cases. Just the way they came on my yard.
Carver's Black Widow had the long lappy bat ears. Dogs bred around the Carver's Black Widow stock had those lappy or straight stiff bat ears. My J. Young's Sally was a buckskin/white markings with the stiff up right bat ears. My J. Young's Red Lady had the Bat ears and was red nose and dark red brandy wine color. These bitches carried the Mayfield Sunshine or Fontenot-Maloney dogs in their breeding.
Most of these type looking dogs especially the bitches. With this trait usually are good game dogs and made good brood dogs. Cheers

Bently this little story will probably have nothing to do with your long eared bitch. Dog man by the last name of Williams was one of the dog men that ran with Mr. Burns/Mr. Bo Harris/ Watkins/Eric Winingham/Tant/Crews etc.
When Scotty McNeil quit the dog game he sold his Carver-Creel Chuck dog to Williams. When Williams decided to quit the dog game. I bought the McNeil's Chuck dog from him. I was the last owner of Carver-Creel- Ed Crenshaw bred Chuck dog.
Scotty Todd had found one of the last tight Lightner dogs that was in N.C. This bitche's name was Mousy. Mousy was a very nice looking little tan or brindle bitch with those long lappy ears. Not 100% sure of the dog's color anymore but was one or the other. Tar Heel Matt had some of the last of that blood and one or both of his dogs were real old. This little bitch Scotty Todd had may have been off some of the last breeding's off of Tar Heel Matt''s Lightner dogs.
Now here is the interesting part. Scotty bred Mousy to the Chuck dog and she had a litter of pups. The only one I saw later on was a really nice looking buckskin bitch with the long bat ears. Eric/Bo/Watkins and Burns were working her for a match. These older dog men like to nip on the bottle all during the day. They were out late in those swamps, road working this bitch. On the way in they stopped at a cross roads country store, went inside to get some refreshments. Meanwhile the bitch dog was not in a kennel but loosely chained in the back of the truck. The bitch had jumped off the truck and got under the back wheel. Not checking on the dog, they drove off, back over this bitch and killed her.
Later after I bought Chuck I went back down there to see if I could buy one of the other dogs off that breeding. Eric said his brother had the rest of those dogs and one being a good acting male. None were for sale.
None of those fellows would let me see those dogs and never knew what became of them. It was hush, hush, top secret for all of them. LOL I can not prove it one way or the other. But I find it hard to believe they did not bred some of that stock back into their dogs. Would have been crazy not to. LOL
P.S. Williams did not buy McNeil's Chuck just to look at him. He was bred a good bit down in that part of the country. For what ever reasons no breeding's off Chuck are shown in their dogs. Cheers

A.B. Forsythe the man who also owned the famous Mayfield's Nigger dog and got Nigger directly from Earl Tudor. He had a dog Called Dusky. His ears stood up real direct and were around 8 inches long. He looked real funny. Those long ears made me think of deer antlers everytime I saw him. They weren't just long they were as wide as your hand. He never sired a pup that I ever saw that had those long tall bat ears or any size bat ears. I wish I had a photo to show you guys. He really looked strange.
Ditto Foxman. I always believed there was a lot more of the Forsythe and De Cordova dogs bred up in those Maloney dogs and some of those other dog men's yard than was let on. I also believe there is some Orbie Coplin blood way back there in those early bred Patrick dogs and some Creel-Carver breeding in some of those older bred Charleston S.C. swamp dogs. One of the best breeding's that Crews and Burns made was when they crossed their dogs with some of the Plumber's Alligator blood line through the Hammonds/Kreshner dogs.
Just my thoughts on older day happenings. No way to prove anything one way or the other and does not matter anymore. Why the parents and grand parents of any dog still are the best guide to go by. Twelve or fourteen generations down the road who knows what was bred to what. LOL Cheers

I take excellent care of my animals. I believe if you don't have the means to do that, you shouldn't own dogs. That little Snooty dog has lots of personality, an extremely smart dog.
Ditto Evolution kennels I agree 100%. That is the most Snooty breeding that can be had today. Have you ever got to talk with Mr. Mims. He is quite the talker, chatted with him awhile back. He is getting up in age as well. C. Middleton liked the Snooty line of dogs also. Cheers

I've seen it pop up in tramp dogs periodically. this one I had years ago had bat ears...half the time they appeared half-prick, but most often they stood straight up.
http://www.thepitbullbible.com/forum/pics/dog_024471_01.jpg
I usually expect to see bat ears in smaller dogs...I have some Banjo dogs and they are not uncommon in the smaller ones. Seems like in that case the ear is just not long/heavy enough to fold over...like the cartilage can fully support the the weight of the ear enough to hold it upright. But this fella (above) was a pretty good size with some pretty big ears.

Those bat eared doggies have some character for sure. I would imagine they have tougher/more cartilage for their ears to stand prick like that.

That is true, S_B, the bat ears show more personality and character ... I just think the full-drop ears are more regal/majestic.
But that is an interesting theory that they may be tougher in order to support the weight :-?

All the bat eared ones I've experienced had fine ear leathers, which didn't need much cartilage to stand..I have seen heavy ear leathers on a few(moreso todays dogs)and they have lots of thick/big cartilage, which doesn't appeal to me. Just as dropped ears, if they are big and thick, they'll sure as fate catch them in something..lol

I used to get it on occasion. This dog doesn't have a true bat eared dog in his pedigree until the 6th generation, Smith & Walton's CH FOX who I fed daily and bred several times. I keep telling folks it takes 4-6 generations for traits to resurface, unless you get to a level of inbreeding where the dogs produce themselves with greater regularity.

Got a granddaughter off this bad bitch
***PROHIBITED LINKS***
After rereading this article. The other thought that came to me, was that our dogs are considered a Bull Terrier breed of dogs. In some of the pictures of the 1900's bred Pit Bull Terriers. You will see dogs with those Bat or Lappy type ears. Less so in the Colby strain, but more so in the Feeley/Corcoran/Shipley/Armitage/ De Cordova/ Tudor/Doyle etc. dogs. Was prominent in the early 1900's English Bull Terriers and even today as a show standard in the English Bull Terriers. IMHO, is part of the genetic Bull Terrier make up of our dogs today from the dogs of the past.
Probably just old timer hearsay or their thoughts back then. One was if a dog came white with the black tattoo type ticking in the skin, along with small black or yellow lemon spots. Was the Feeley/Corcoran/Shipley gene traits. If white with patches of brindle or other colors and a Colby type head. Was a Colby Trait. Came with the lappy or bat ears was some of the Lightner Traits showing out. Have the longer thicker type muzzle/Eyes up front and beady black looking eyes/ was a Armitage or Bull Terrier trait. Tom Garner's Dolly showed the older Bull Terrier Traits in head and body. Which I prefer over all other body types.
IMHO if out of a litter of pups. Up pops a all white with black skin tattoo tickings and those black or small lemon spots. Best set them aside and give more attention to. Can be very good producers. Another is those dark red with a black muzzle. Called red smuts. Seen some good dogs that were red smuts. Usually are rough/hard mouth dogs. Most of these mentioned traits show up in the Carver/Tudor family of dogs.
One last comment, I had read from Heinzl many years back. He said the old timers of his hey day did not consider Black as a Bull dog color but was a Terrier Color. I called the original breeder of the American Bulldog, who lived in Georgia. I asked him if he ever got a all black or any dogs of his with black markings on them. He said no. ADBA did a story on this Dog man and pictures of his dogs. If you see the pictures of the original dogs and what the show dog people have done with them. You can see what happens when you change a breed from it's working abilities to a Show dog ability. Same happed to the English Bull Terrier/English Stafford Bull Terrier and these recent bred AM Staff dogs. Cheers
Very nice and informative points of view! Thank you cyj.
Again CYJ, spot on.
The white colored dogs with the black ticks on the coat and the black tattooing on the skin are a rare sight. As a young guy I saw one at a show that was the ugliest little dog I had ever seen. When I got up close his skin/coat was as much bird dog as bulldog. I thought we showed up with a rough and hard mouthed dog. The dog I bet on was cotton mouthed in comparison. He was a Jeep/Red BoyXJeep/Bolio bred dog. He too had bat ears. He was out of the hills of Tennessee.
One of the regrets I had is that I never saw the need for a lot of the dogs I had. Looking back I kick myself.
http://www.thepitbullbible.com/forum/bulldog_dogs_profile.php?dog_id=42272
This dog was as bat eared as they come. I had a half sister of his off Kasai and Rabbitt Ears. She too could stand them straight up at attention.
Its funny how things change. I can remember when it was not a bulldog unless its ears were trimmed. LOL Times change.
I seen a number of them in the Bolio line of dogs we had, some in the Brakes dogs as well.
EWO
A lot of need for pictures.....
