I personally don't think there are any benefits to a raw hide; they're expensive and they tear easy.

What I like to use are Firehouse Tugs (http://www.obriensk9supply.com/store/index.php?target=products&product_id=1672) by O'Brien's Supply. (Although I ask them to send me a tug that has not been painted or dyed.)

Firehouse Tugs last 10x as long as any hide ... and are more reflected of a dog having "something" in his mouth than a flat hide IMO ...

I have never used rawhide and don't need to. My pup loves the firehouse tug toys. It works great on the end of a flirt pole cause if she doesn't have a strong grip it can slip right out of her mouth, which gives her more drive to play.
