I got a question for the board. I have a 3yo very valuable brood bitch that is over sensitive to wasp and bee stings. This morning she got stung in the mouth on the tung of course. The tung swelled up like a balloon and she got difficulties breathing. I gave her A shot of solu-cortef 250mg/2ml hydro-cortisone, and the swelling went down in minutes. And so far she looks all good. My question is: Is this the most effective way to treat an allergic reaction? What are you guys opinions?

For a true anaphylactic reaction, epinephrine is the treatment of choice.

If your bitch is just swelling badly, solu-delta is a good choice, but dex is better.
Typically, solu-delta is the preferred choice for hypovolemic shock, but dex is the preferred choice to reduce swelling.
Just realize that hypovolemic shock and anaphylactic shock are two different things completely.

Since you've already given the solu-delta, and it's working, you should be all right. But, just remember, in a severe truly anaphylactic reaction, epinephrine is what you need to give.

Hope she's okay,

Jack

Anaphylaxis is no joke.

Glad to hear your situation was not that serious :D

Thnx. I had to make a quick decision when she had trouble breathing. Solu came to mind and I gave it with good results. Why I'm asking is is it happens again. Being prepared with a better knowledge.

Nobody else? Come on guys. I'm sure there are more with info about different shock treatment. I asked a couple of vets I know and they both agreed that Solu-cortef was the way to go, on this matter.
