I'm sure that the majority of the good folks here know that once upon a time when they would show their dogs, nor was not illegal. People would win 3 shows that would allow them to classify their dog as a champion.
It did not matter if he won 3 in a row or won 2 lost 1 and then won the next won, he still was classified as a Ch. with a loss draw etc. He would advertise him for stud or sale as a Ch.So-So dog (3xW1xL) but he was still a Ch.
Now the next best thing would be a Grand Champion. A dog to claim this title would have had to win 5 shows. With NO losses during his showing. If he had won 4 then went on to lose his next he was, as we said earlier a Ch.4xW 1xL. But still a champion.(Ch.) Now if he won one more that would make him a 5xW 1xl but he still would be titled as a Ch.5xW 1xl still. Although if had won 5 straight he would then be called a Grand Champion. (Gr.Ch.)
Tolerate this for a minute please and you shall were I'm going with this in a few seconds.
So we have now a Gr.Ch who has won 5 straight. They take him out for 2 more, he wins. So he is a Gr. Ch.(7xW) now. They take Gr. Ch.So-So for his 8th and he loses.
He automatically will now become a 8xW 1xL now, but he will still have the privilege of being registered as a Ch still, but no longer can be considered a Gr. Ch any longer. Ch.So-So 8xW, 1xl..
So we understand a Gr Ch is not supposed to have any blemishes to his record.
We have many Gr. Ch dogs around (even a dbl Gr Ch 10xW ... Such I was blessed see go for that 10th) Now what I don't understand or ever understood.
How did the dog with the Heart, Gr. Ch.Art ever get that title.
Yes he won 5 shows but he also has one loss (before someone gets all wound up that blasphemy has been spewed on the great Art dog. Which he was. Those that have done of the older SDJ can look it up, registered and written.
He had that 1 loss (no less to the Great Texan himself)
I always wanted to know the resin to this.
I know the answer that was given to me by the man that baptised him with the title but I just want to hear if people think it's right to call that dog a Gr.Ch with a loss but any other dog at the time from Europe or any other country besides the USA that had a Grch or 5xW was not allowed to call his dog a Gr Ch.
Sorry for onslaught of thoughts but I'm just curious to hear today's dog aficionados thoughts on this.
