    stud pissing blood

my stud dog is 7 years old. hasn't been bred this year and is in a concrete 8 x 12 pen. nothing has changed in his diet but he has started pissing blood and piss all day now. has anyone had this problem or know what is going on. i took him to the vet yesterday and he ran a cbc on him and checked him for worms and his prostate and didnt find anything. i have to take him back tomorrow since he is still bleeding. his last 3 litters has been 10 plus litters. i have made plans to get straws off him in 2 weeks now. any help is appreciated.

What color? Bright red or dark?

It may be red blood cells getting killed by babesia. Check his gums, get some bloodwork

May have kidney stones, urinary tract infection (UTI), bladder infection, etc.
It can also be a sign of cancer in these areas ...

Best thing to do is bloodwork, vet exam, and (if infection) deal with the appropriate antibiotics.

Won't hurt to give him heavy cephalexin doses (15mg/lb, 3x/day, every 8 hours) ... or heavy TMZ doses (25mg/lb, every 12 hrs) ... until you can get him to the vet ...

    Good luck,

Don't think you need to worry about babesosis pissing actual blood. Generally with babesia they piss dark urine, dark orange to brown.

What Jack said has you pretty much covered. But if you have seen him licking obsessively, or gnawing on his genitals, this could also be a reason for the blood.

Also prostate problems can cause this, 80% of male dogs can have issues with their prostate over the age of 8.

    Good luck man,

Yup. I've seen babesia red, but usually dark yellow orange. My vet said prostate infection should be OK with baytril for 15 days.

With babesia, the dog isn't actually pissing blood, it's excess billirubin, which gives off that reddish-orange tint.

For pissing blood, I would be leaning more toward UTI or kidney problem, than prostate, for which TMZ is first-line and Baytril would be recommended as second-line.

Of course, if it's an injury or cancer, then none of this matters. But, for infection, most dogmen have cephalexin or TMZ onhand to be given immediately until they can get to a vet.

And, if it's a UTI, even with a vet the TMZ should be choice numero uno.
