Old bust info. request
Around 1971 I attended a show at Garner, NC in Johnston County put own by Lonzo Pratt . At that time there was no law against being a spectator. It was a 5 or 6 event. It was a 20 dollar gate fee. Everyone was excited about Harris' Gr. Ch. Big Boy being there. A beautiful 66 pound plus black monster, rumored to have some stainless steel tooth implants. I do not know the true particulars. But, as a teenager I certainly bought into it and provided by neighbor J.D. Couch with a ride. Probably 60 vehicles met early at a restaurant in Garner for breakfast. A highway patrolman stopped to direct traffic for us. After breakfast we went a short distance and parked in a field below the highway. The pit was under a couple nice shade trees. Over 200 people, men, women and children attended. Pete Sparks was there dressed in a white suit, hat, with a bow tie, cane, and beard. He looked like a trim Col. Sanders. He was still reporting for his magazine. I was standing midway during the 2nd event, one foot behind Lonzo, looking over his head into the box. James was on the other side. A man dressed in bib overalls walked over to Lonzo, 2 feet from me and spoke directly into Lonzo's face, "Lonzo! the law is on their way here, right now!" Lonzo, replied "Who else have you told?" the man replied" No one, just you". Lonzo replied,"Then keep your damn mouth shut". I walked over to James and told him what was said. He said not to worry about it, that Lonzo must have it under control. 30 minutes later a helicopter came over with a m16 hanging out and a wave of 50 officers with Shotguns and m16s. 6 were arrested that day and 6 the next week. I had Loposay's Hazel asleep with a .38 on the console of my 66 Barracuda when an officer was recording plates. I was lucky with that huge rear glass nothing was spotted. I learned later why such a large force was activated. But, nothing would have happened if Lonzo had not been selfish about the gate he held in his pocket and warned the crowd.
