    breeding question

would your prefer to breed to a dog is is a direct son of dog "X" or to a dog that is tripe bred on dog "X" in 3rd gen.

That's just all on paper. It doesn't tell us what the dogs really are genetically. The son could be a clone of his father or vice versa for the triple bred dog. They could be the furthest thing from dog X even though the ped says differently. I would base my mode of action on my knowledge of the two dogs and not the pedigree.

    Exactly right

Selection is the key ... not the pedigree ... how well the individual dog represents the desired ancestors himself.

what if the individual is representing his ancestors really well, yet all his litter mates are not?

As stated in The Art of Breeding Dogs, it depends on how many of the littermates

Also, just to throw a fly in the ointment, sometimes the lesser of two brothers, in the pit, will prove to be the greater of the two brothers in the stud pen ... since the ability to produce, and the ability to perform, are two distinct, separate abilities
