I have a dog that does not work at all, wont run a mill longer than 5 min, wont chase a hide or rope, wont run next to a bike..? He jumps around all day and the only thing that excites him is hunting... does anyone have any experience dealing with this issue?
Have you tried walking another dog infront of him, tried putting a rabbit infront of the treadmill? That should work if he likes to hunt.

I can assure you i am niether of the 3. I have many dogs and i physically run, walk and flirt everydog i have on a regular bases. Walking is the only thing he does enthusiastically and train dragging, animals in front of him on the mill hasnt worked, food hasnt worked. Its frustrating to say the least.
I would disagree with 90%, but I do see where you are going with that train of thought.
And to the original poster, yes, the best bitch I ever owned would not do squat. She would burn the mill up on Day #1 but would not make it move on Day #2. First time using a bike she was amazing, next time absolutely nothing. Hand walking or chain pulling was more of me dragging her where we went. At times I thought she just figured things out and did not see the point. We could not bait her with anything.
The only thing she would do is chase after a yard dog from one end of her chain to the other. I swapped the chain to a 5/8" log chain and got a 2lb. collar. The yard dog would chase rocks til I stopped throwing. Her keep consisted of me sitting on a five gallon bucket and throwing rocks for a couple hours a day. The sprints were about 27-28 feet with a 14ft chain. She ended up in superb condition and won her get together in 1:01.
Lesson learned: Work the dogs when they are young so they can learn to do the exercises and enjoy the exercises, and even look forward to the exercises. Second part, identify the non-workers before the forfeit is paid and one ends up in a pickle. (like I did)
Another bitch my buddy had. We made a 20ft pole out of electrical conduit with a snap hook attached for a bitch with no work ethic at all. He pushed her out into a pond and she really thought long and hard about just drowning. She would not even swim, at first anyway. She won in over an hour but it was ability, talent, and gameness as conditioning came up a little short.
Same lessons as before. Either teach them the skills as young dogs or identify their shortcomings prior to setting weights and dates. EWO

I hear you EWO! Ill figure something out, thanks for the help. I bred him and when he was young he was more active. He is stil going to go to school, and getting good grades... i guess ill just have to get more creative.
Creativity is a must. All the dogs are not the same. I have had a few that just went all out like a blur on everything they tried. Others had to be baited. Some just were not good workers. I think the percentages of workers increase with exposure earlier in life. I try to get all my dogs standing on the mill early on. I let the puppies play in the yard and I ride around on the four wheeler. They get use to chasing it. Then when the time comes there are no real surprises for them to over come. EWO
