Thread: old dog with swollen lymph nodes

  1. #11
Well it has been awhile and the old dog's neck is now swollen again. The swelling had gone down some but now it is back again so this has to be an infection caused by that tick bite.

I am not going to the vet here, I called them asking if they would give me a prescription for Doxycycline, which is what this old dog had in 2012 when she had Lyme disease. They told me I have to pay $300 for a "wellness" exam… and that's not gonna happen. I need to find a new vet.

Since I want to put this old dog on antibiotics for the infection, what is my best choice? I re-read Jack's article, this one --

    http://www.thepitbullbible.com/forum/content.php?176

I have Amoxicillin and Cephalexin here, but I do not have Doxycycline. From my reading, the Doxycycline would be the best choice…

Should I give the old dog one of the antibiotics I have here, or should I order Doxycycline and wait until it arrives?

I found Doxy here, anyone have any experience buying it from these sellers?

    Thanks for any suggestions…

I order from the second one listed with no problems. Also check some fish stores in your area. Might get lucky.

SGC, I order directly from the owner of the item pictured in your first link. Great guy, always on time and usually sends a couple extras as I'm a loyal repeat customer.

I knew it was that damn tick!!

Doxy will have her good as new in just a couple days. Also for the arthritis you could try Glyco flex III, I'll post an eBay link but you can get it elsewhere http://www.ebay.com/bhp/glyco-flex-iii

Many thanks for the help! I ordered the Doxy from the first link and it should be here soon.

I just did not want to put her on one of the other antibiotics if the Doxy was the best choice. I will call my vet up north who just saw this dog recently to see if she might call in a prescription, but in case she won't at least it is ordered and should be here in a couple of days.

S_B, thank you for the recommendation of the Glyco Flex III. I had 2 big bottles of that and it does seem to help. I am out now and switched back to the Liquid Health 5000 last week. I have used both and they both seem to work about equally well.

    I guess I should update this thread…

The old dog got worse and all of her lymph nodes and glands were very swollen. I put her on the doxycycline and it did not touch it.

She had lymphoma cancer all thru her body. She was not in great pain but the swellings were making it hard for her to breathe so I had her put to sleep since she could not recover. She had some good last days and I did not want her to suffer.

That old dog was with me for many long miles and showed many people that pit bulls are not what the news media says they are…
Rest in peace baby, I miss you.

Fuck cancer. If your dogs get swollen glands that do not respond to antibiotics, it is probably cancer.

I lost two of my favorite house dogs to this as well one was almost 16 the other 13, I lost them 5 months apart. You are correct it sucks to see them go down this way. The vet told me lymphoma as well but honestly I wasn't really convinced that was the case.

The common denominator is the tick, we had just moved to a new property which was wooded and near a heavily wooded area. We sprayed and spread granules before moving the dogs onto the property which protected them from the ticks but not the roaming house dogs.

I can't imagine a tick can cause lymphoma? The first dog we treated with Imizol, doxy and pred. The pred was a bad idea but that's what vets typically prescribe.

Sorry you lost your old dog, sounds like she had some good days with her best friend before you set her free.
