Thread: Babesia treatment question

    Babesia treatment question

I was reading over the babesia treatment in the bible, It says to give imizol once a week until improvement but the bottle states dose once and repeat two weeks later. Im going to follow jacks protocol but was wondering if I should repeat it after the two week mark if the dog still shows any symptoms . Also is it safe to give berenil after a shot of imizol ? because my vet told me it is canis but she also didn't believe it was babesia when she was pulling blood for the blood work.. I am just a bit skeptical as far as vets go bc I've been screwed by them in the past. I also went ahead and wormed them for hooks just in case. The reason I feel it is babesia is bc it was triggered when the climate became extremely cold and it was around 3 weeks after a hunt.. Ive given the dog his first imizol shot and he is showing improvement, increase in appetite, stomach is not bloated, urine is back to normal color and his gums are showing some color.. any insight will be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks

Sounds like you are recovering and that's great. I've only given Imizol at the onset of symptoms, then followed 2 weeks later. While also giving Doxycycline and had complete success.

Imizol Dosage And Administration: (link http://www.drugs.com/vet/imizol.html)
Use intramuscularly or subcutaneously at a rate of 6.6 mg/kg (3 mg/lb) body weight. Repeat the dose in two (2) weeks, for a total of two (2) treatments.

I'm sure Jack can help you further as far as the more frequent dosing. Good luck!

Berenil is described to be used once too. But if it's needed you can give another shot. Think Jack had even given it 3 times one a occasion. If you see improvement i wouldnt use Imizol more more than twice. Same counts for berenil after one shot. imo

    Thanks
The dog is definitely improving, I stopped the doxy, clindamycin and flagyl once I gave him imizol. Should I have continued the antibiotics as well? I am still giving b12 and iron folic acid vit supps..

Berenil should be taken seriously. It is not allowed in the US precisely because dogs do spontaneously die from one injection.

I have given at least 40 injections of Berenil and never had one fatality, but I know of one fellow who gave twice the recommended dose and his dog was dead within the hour ...

So use the PROPER dose, as directed, do *not* load up

On the Imizol, I have never heard of a dog dying from its use. (Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I've never heard of it--unlike Berenil, where again it's known it can happen and I know of a case where it did happen.)

When in doubt, follow the label. I have used both Berenil and Imizol together many times without ill effect.

I can't predict the future, so it doesn't mean it won't happen to one of yours though.

As always, take care. Do NOT give more per-dose than what the label indicates ... and good luck.

As far as frequency, I have typically gone every 2 weeks also.

Thanks I will follow the directions to a T.. Also I keep hearing people say that babeisa will flare back up when I stress the dog in a keep or something else, has anyone experienced this.

It was mentioned that Berenil and Imizol can be used together with no ill effects.
Can those 2 injections be given on the same day? Or on consecutive days?

Update : I caught this case late, as the timing (8 wks post exposure), and my lack of paying close attention to this dog, thru me off. I decided to "throw" antibiotics at her , and have her cephalaxin 500mg , 2x day for three days.

No improvement, and again , I had my head up my ass while tending to another issue I had on my yard. So I then gave her cipro 500mg /day for two more days. ( May have given her 1000mg day. Can't remember and wasn't keeping a record of treatment.)I'm sure I did harm rather than help up to this point.

Finally I realized what I was dealing with and gave her Berenil. Started her on Doxy. Third day after Berenil , I gave her Imizol. Next day after that, another shot of Berenil. Have fluids Sub Q a few times a day up to this point as well.

Six days after first Berenil shot , she started really improving.
Continued Doxy for 13 days total, and now she seems to me to be back to 98% of her bad ass self.

Glad I have this forum to seek help when I need it.
