i keep em on stone, never had problems
If the pads are too dry and cracked I just use Vaseline. If they are soft and tender I use Tuf-Foot.
Once a week I soak the pads in betadine/peroxide mixture for a good cleaning!

You can do like R2L has suggested if you are able to do so. I've thought about having pen filled with some rock just for that reason. After the dog living in the pen for about a month, and walking on the stone all the time, their paws toughen up to where they can withstand whatever type of work you're doing.
You can use Jack's product. I use Happy Jack Pad Kote as it's just easier for me to get, and it works great.
all my chain spots have stone in them, and touch wood never had a problem
lets say youre 2 weeks out and the pads come off, what should you do?
Rest until its heal. Should take a few days to a week. I wouldn't hand walk my dogs the last few weeks of their keep just because of that reason. Hand walking should only be done at the beginning of the keep so if they messed their pads up, they'll still have plenty of time to heal.
I do a lot of road work with my dogs and I have no pad issues if the dog is walked routinely. I run the dogs on the street and have only had pad injuries 2 times in 15 yrs. JMO
If you are messing the pads up you are doing it wrong. You need to know your dogs good enough to know their best working pace and adjust if they go over it. I use rollerblading on asfalt roads in my keep, never had any issues.
