Canine Health - The Importance Of Sunlight

Probably the most overlooked ingredient to a healthy happy dog is sunlight. We must provide our dogs with adequate sunlight for optimum health.

Sunlight is a supplement most take for granted every single day. Like water and food, without sunlight you nor your dogs could survive, it is essential for all mammals.

Sunlight deprivation can lead to a host of medical conditions. Veterinarians are linking the rise of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels) to house and kennel dogs. Dogs are more prone to this disease than even we humans are, it is slowing becoming an epidemic in the canine world. So many humans are out of touch with what our 4 legged friends really need.

Without sunlight puppies and dogs are prone to diseases and skeletal deformities such as ricketts. Sunlight deprivation can also lead to infertility due to low serotonin and melatonin levels.

Sunlight provides our dogs with the important supplement Vitamin D through Ultra Violet Rays. These UVR'S are synthesized through our dogs skin, Vitamin D will then accumulate in the cells of the liver and intestine where it enhances the absorption of Calcium and Phosphorus.

So next time you see your dogs "bathing in the sun" think of all the benefits he or she is getting that didn't cost you a dime.

Excellent post! People often forget how important sunlight is to our dogs, especially growing pups who need the vitamin D for bone growth.

Interesting about the increase of hypothyroidism in dogs. Along with food and water and exercise, sunlight is essential and dogs kept inside or in kennels do not always get that time to bask in the sun.

A simple thing to provide but one that can be overlooked.
Common sense isn't so common these days.

Haha this makes the humaniacs' whining about keeping dogs outdoors even more ridiculous. Their quest to treat dogs like we do modern humans is ever-mystifying.
