Accidents.
This may have been posted or included in another place. Here it is.
At some point when owning a bulldog, hunting or just having them in a house things happen. Shoulders and stifles are dangerous targets. These area house a neurovascular bundle. Neurovascular bundle contain a nerve artery and vein. In these cases the femoral and axillary bundles. A lot of damage can be inflicted here and quickly.
If you are able to separate the dogs and you see bleeding, either dark venous, or bright red that won't stop there is a good chance the bundle was hit. Getting the dog to a vet is always an the best option. Another option is cut a shirt into strips. 4-6 inches strips should work nicely. Socks are another option. Tie the strip or tourniquet around the injury. You want it snug but not tied down with the full strength of a grown man. You want the band wide not tied in a narrow tightly tied band.
Usually it doesn't take long for the bleeding to stop. Thirty minutes to and hour then re-evaluate the injury. Something as simple as a tourniquet made out of an old shirt can save your dogs life. Otherwise, you can end up with a injury that leaks and leaks and leaks. Your dog dies.
Steroids can help depending on the level of damage. Minor to moderate injuries usually can benefit from some form of antibiotic. I like to provide some Mrsa coverage. Bactrim is a good option. While it is used for urinary tract infections it is also used to treat soft tissue infections. You will notice the level of redness and drainage decrease after administration. There is baytril, augnentin there are a plethora of choices. I would not use penicillin or amoxicillin as the levels of resistance are high. If you use it look and monitor results.
Doing these simple things may allow your dog to survive an accident.
