After rereading this article. The other thought that came to me, was that our dogs are considered a Bull Terrier breed of dogs. In some of the pictures of the 1900's bred Pit Bull Terriers. You will see dogs with those Bat or Lappy type ears. Less so in the Colby strain, but more so in the Feeley/Corcoran/Shipley/Armitage/ De Cordova/ Tudor/Doyle etc. dogs. Was prominent in the early 1900's English Bull Terriers and even today as a show standard in the English Bull Terriers. IMHO, is part of the genetic Bull Terrier make up of our dogs today from the dogs of the past.
Probably just old timer hearsay or their thoughts back then. One was if a dog came white with the black tattoo type ticking in the skin, along with small black or yellow lemon spots. Was the Feeley/Corcoran/Shipley gene traits. If white with patches of brindle or other colors and a Colby type head. Was a Colby Trait. Came with the lappy or bat ears was some of the Lightner Traits showing out. Have the longer thicker type muzzle/Eyes up front and beady black looking eyes/ was a Armitage or Bull Terrier trait. Tom Garner's Dolly showed the older Bull Terrier Traits in head and body. Which I prefer over all other body types.
IMHO if out of a litter of pups. Up pops a all white with black skin tattoo tickings and those black or small lemon spots. Best set them aside and give more attention to. Can be very good producers. Another is those dark red with a black muzzle. Called red smuts. Seen some good dogs that were red smuts. Usually are rough/hard mouth dogs. Most of these mentioned traits show up in the Carver/Tudor family of dogs.
One last comment, I had read from Heinzl many years back. He said the old timers of his hey day did not consider Black as a Bull dog color but was a Terrier Color. I called the original breeder of the American Bulldog, who lived in Georgia. I asked him if he ever got a all black or any dogs of his with black markings on them. He said no. ADBA did a story on this Dog man and pictures of his dogs. If you see the pictures of the original dogs and what the show dog people have done with them. You can see what happens when you change a breed from it's working abilities to a Show dog ability. Same happed to the English Bull Terrier/English Stafford Bull Terrier and these recent bred AM Staff dogs. Cheers

Again CYJ, spot on.
The white colored dogs with the black ticks on the coat and the black tattooing on the skin are a rare sight. As a young guy I saw one at a show that was the ugliest little dog I had ever seen. When I got up close his skin/coat was as much bird dog as bulldog. I thought we showed up with a rough and hard mouthed dog. The dog I bet on was cotton mouthed in comparison. He was a Jeep/Red BoyXJeep/Bolio bred dog. He too had bat ears. He was out of the hills of Tennessee.
One of the regrets I had is that I never saw the need for a lot of the dogs I had. Looking back I kick myself.

This dog was as bat eared as they come. I had a half sister of his off Kasai and Rabbitt Ears. She too could stand them straight up at attention.
Its funny how things change. I can remember when it was not a bulldog unless its ears were trimmed. LOL Times change.
I seen a number of them in the Bolio line of dogs we had, some in the Brakes dogs as well.
